Cooper laughed. “You’re anything but heartless Banana.” He told her before frowning a bit. “Come on, please? Just one date. One date and if you don’t like it, we’ll still be friends, I won’t be hurt and neither will you.” He told her. He was hurt but he wasn’t going to let it show.

He took a deep breath and while Anna was saying something, he leaned in and captured her lips in a passionate kiss. He knew he was pushing his limits but he wanted her so badly he was just willing to do anything. His arms wrapped around her waist as he deepened the kiss.

“Cooper, please stop. It’ll be too hard on us both, you’ll want more and I won’t. It just won’t work.” Anna said, desperately wanting this to go away. She wished she could retract what she had said earlier, what had started all of this, but she couldn’t. “I’m sorry, Cooper. Really, I am. I know I started this and I know I’m the one making it hard by saying know, but really you have to see it through my eyes. Things are tough right now and I-” Anna hadn’t seen Cooper coming, she couldn’t have predicted his next move and was stunned at it to say the least.

She had barely a moment to react before she felt his lips on hers. She wasn’t expecting him to do that… She also wasn’t expecting how she felt when he did. No, no this wasn’t right. Anna gently pushed away from Cooper, stumbling back a bit as she did. “I’m sorry.”

Cooper sighed. “It wasn’t easy, I was such a whimp. I was way too scared to tell you. I know you don’t want to ruin being friends but there’s so much more that we could be. I do love you and I know you feel something back otherwise you would have said no right away.” He commented.

He took her hand in his and laced their fingers together. “We won’t fall apart. I promise.” He told her, kissing her hand sweetly. “Please Banana? Even just one date would make me happy. Well, a bunch of dates would make my life but even just one. Please?”

“I kind of am saying no right away, Cooper. This is me trying to be easy on you about it. I’m not gonna just shoot you down, contrary to popular belief I’m not that heartless.” Anna said, crossing her arms. “You don’t love me, Cooper. If anything it’s friendly. I love you, but it’s like a brother.” Anna told him, wishing that this had never happened.

“Cooper, no.” She shook her head, trying to shake he problem away with it. “I can’t. I can’t do that. I’m sorry, but no.” Anna said, stepping back from him. “Please, don’t make this any harder than it already is.”

Cooper started to frown. “I do Banana, I’ve believed it for a while. Look, I know you’re a hot shot journalist and I’m a busy actor but that’s not stopping me from telling you how I’ve felt for years. You were always with someone else and the only person I’ve ever wanted you to be with is me. Please, give me a chance.” He told Anna, looking her in the eyes.

“I’ve been waiting years for you. I know that things will be difficult if we’re together but I want to make it work. I love you.” He added on, still maintaining eye contact. As scary as it was to pour his heart out to the brunette girl, he knew he was doing the right thing.

“Cooper, I’ve only ever been with Patrick and as rocky as it was… I mean, there was so much time before him that you could’ve said something. Why didn’t you then?” She asked, honestly curious as to why he’d waited so long. “It’s not that I won’t give you a chance, I just… Why ruin what we have now? You’re my best friend and I know it’s awfully juvenile to say, but can’t we just stay that?”

Anna wasn’t sure how to deflect this, to make it something easier on both of them. “You don’t love me, stop saying that. Even if we were, you even admit it’d be hard. We’d probably fall apart and then what? What happens then? Would we be friends again? I’d say no, because we would have this hanging over us.”

Cooper couldn’t get Anna out of his mind. He was ecstatic that she was single since this could be his huge chance to be with her. When he got the invitation out to go for a walk in Central Park, he accepted right away. He put on a nicer pair of jeans, a button down shirt and a pair of Converse before heading out of his apartment. The filming for his movie was over so he had a couple of weeks off to do absolutely nothing.

When he saw her again, he smiled brightly. She looked so beautiful even in the most casual of outfits. He waved to her happily and they began walking, having little casual conversations. When Anna asked him about why he was happy to hear she wasn’t married, he took in a deep breath and answered, “I’ve wanted to be with you since I met you Anna. I’m not even kidding. You’re the only girl I’ve ever loved.” He was nervous to how she was going to respond but he knew that he couldn’t have waited any longer.

Anna could only imagine so many outcomes to what he was saying, but hoped that it wasn’t the one she was sure it was. That he had feelings for her. They were adults now, far more mature than they were in high school, much more smarter even. It wasn’t the time nor place to be having such feelings for each other. What, with Cooper’s excelling acting career and Anna’s climb up the journalism ladder. It just wasn’t right.

As Anna listened she kept wishing it were a dream, that Cooper weren’t really saying this, that it was a mistake. Then she heard ‘loved’ and could have easily fainted right there and then. “Cooper…” She began, unsure of how to let someone down easily. “I-… You don’t really believe that, do you?”

Ever since seeing Cooper again he’d been on Anna’s mind quite a bit… and she couldn’t exactly understand why. Then again, the last thing she needed was to become estranged again with the boy she so greatly missed. So, Anna invited Cooper out with her, a walk through the legendary Central Park would help get things sorted out between them, why she couldn’t stop thinking about him, why he reacted the way he did when he found out she was single… Why her relationship status was so important to him to begin with.

As the two walked, they made their way around conversations of the weather, events coming up, plenty of small talk to last a lifetime, but not touching on the topics Anna felt were important at the time. “Coop?” She began, figuring she’d just ask herself. “The other day when you were talking about what Patrick told you after graduation and then you found out it wasn’t true?” Anna looked down a moment, then back up at Cooper. “How come you seemed so… Excited? I guess would be the best word.”

Anna sighed softly, looking down. “No, no none of that ever happened.” It wasn’t so much that Anna missed Patrick, because really, she didn’t. It was the way she felt so alone all the time, the way that sudden break up signified her loss of connection with home. She furrowed her brow slightly as Cooper moved closer. “Thanks, Cooper…” She smiled a bit, feeling okay with Cooper there.

Anna jumped slightly in her seat when Cooper’s fork fell from his hand and clattered into the glass bowl. “You okay?” She asked, taking another small bite. Anna hadn’t seen Cooper get that nervous look in his eye since high school… And it was always when she was around.

When he told her what Patrick had said she nearly choked to death on the pasta. “Wh-” She coughed, quick covering her mouth with a napkin. Once she’d regained control over her throat and the pasta had dislodged from her windpipe, she looked up at Cooper. “What?! He said that?” She looked down in disbelief, what was Patrick trying to do? “Is that what he told other people?” Anna couldn’t begin to understand why Patrick told Cooper that. “Oh, Cooper no. No, the night before I left he called me… Well, it was abrupt. He said we were over and hung up… Just like that.” Anna muttered, pushing some hair behind her ear.

Cooper laughed loudly when Anna implied that he was dating someone. “Nope, I’m single as ever. Single single little me.” He commented, knowing how stupid he sounded but he wanted to get his point across. He thought about asking Anna what her relationship status was but he wasn’t ready to hear that she was still so in love with Patrick and they were getting married and they had a dog together and they were considering children talk.

“Eat up because I have a whole other pot of mac and cheese.” Cooper joked, nudging her playfully. “Trust me, I’m not interesting. In fact, I’m the most boring person on planet Earth.” He commented with a smirk. “Well, I’m glad to hear that you enjoy my cooking.”

“Really? Wow, I’m surprised.” Anna said, but on the inside she felt happy about it. Which was weird to her, it was the most unusual feeling she’d ever felt towards Cooper. “Well, I guess that’s another thing we have in common.” She sighed, looking down. It was old news, but still the way she was so abruptly dumped was still a touchy topic with Anna. She had put up a lot of walls since then and didn’t plan on taking them down, well, ever really. “But, it’s okay. Being a journalist requires being out all the time and at that rate I’d never be able to keep a relationship. Not a healthy one at least.”

Cooper laughed as he took yet another spoonful of macaroni for himself. “Yeah, you could call me a celebrity. But fangirls out here are nothing like in Los Angeles. When I first did the free credit rate commercials, I had such a hard time keeping them away from me. I’d get swarmed all the damn time.” He told his old friend.

“At least you’ve got a good job now. Seriously, I’ve read your writing, you are so talented.” Coop complimented her, his smile faltering as he noticed her poking at her pasta. “What’s wrong? Is my mac and cheese crappy or is something bugging you?” He asked with concern.

“Hm, maybe the next story I write will be on you?” She said, smiling as she took a bite. “I’m sure you did, all those crazy girls just dying to meet you. Probably more interested in dating you, but no doubt someone’s already claimed that territory by now.” Anna added, hinting a little bit. She hoped it wasn’t too obvious of her, but she was incredibly curious about Cooper’s relationship status. Ever since she had to say goodbye to him, he’d been on her mind. Now that they were together again she couldn’t help, but see things differently.

“Aw, thank you, Coop.” She smiled. “Oh, no no I’m just more interested in talking to you.” Anna replied, taking another small bite. “It’s actually really good, maybe cooking is in your future if acting gets boring.”
